His particular clinical interests include antithrombotic therapy for patients with complex cardiac conditions, including patients with prosthetic valves and myocardial infarction in young patients. The Hemostasis & Thrombosis Clinic is located in Clinic 2C in Duke South. During 2004, 484 new patients were seen, in addition to 1,445 return visits. Outpatient administration of factor concentrates, blood products, and other parenteral agents is performed in the Hematology/Oncology Treatment Facility, located on the same floor as the Hemostasis & Thrombosis Clinic. Outpatient apheresis is available five days a week, adjacent to the Treatment Facility.
All patients seen in the clinic are approached for participation in a patient registry sponsored by the Hemostasis & Thrombosis Centers Pilot Program sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The purpose of this registry is to determine the types of clinical disorders referred to providers in the clinic, referral patterns, and diagnostic and therapeutic interventions performed by clinicians in the Center. There are currently eight Centers participating in this Pilot Program, and Dr. Ortel is the chairperson of the Coordinating Committee for the Program. The participating centers in this program are listed at the CDC Hemostasis & Thrombosis Centers.
